Built in 1856, the Mansion Hill Inn in Madison, Wisconsin, is a striking example of German Romanesque Revival architecture, designed by architects August Kutzbock (more on this Gentleman on the tour as he is one of Madison’s most famous architects and who met with a truly odd fate at Picnic Point - a tale worth hearing) and Samuel Donnell for 19th-century contractor Alexander McDonnell. Originally constructed as a private residence, the building later became a fashionable boarding house before undergoing a meticulous restoration from 1983 to 1986, transforming it into the luxurious boutique hotel guests enjoy today.

But history is only part of the story.

The Mansion Hill Inn is also known as one of Madison’s most haunted locations. Guests and staff alike have reported chilling paranormal encounters that continue to this day. Champagne bottles have mysteriously flown from shelves—not in the 1800s, but as recently as last year, according to the current Events Manager. A Bartender has repeatedly witnessed shadow figures moving through the hotel, most often near the base of the elegant spiral staircase, the architectural centerpiece of the building.  You might even get a signature drink served by him on our tour as he still works there.  Another Manager has heard distinct footsteps descending the staircase, only to find no one there—no living person reaching the landing.

 

Most incredibly, a member of the housekeeping staff even reported seeing a man walking through the basement. Later, after being shown a historical photograph, she confirmed that the figure she saw matched the man in the image.  If you want to discover who that mysterious figure might be, you’ll have to come on the tour.
